Apologies if this has been discussed before. A search didn’t turn up much.
I have a client that wants to create a website that includes a business directory for a specific industry. Their plan is to scrape data from existing directories to build their own. So far, the plan is only to scrape facts about the businesses: name, location, contact info, web address, that kind of stuff.
“While outright duplication of original expression will in many cases be illegal, in the United States the courts ruled in Feist Publications v. Rural Telephone Service that duplication of facts is allowable.”
I know that Chris wrote an article recently (https://css-tricks.com/scrapers-wear-doodoo-hats/) about people stealing his articles and tutorials, which is obviously wrong. But, while I’m no attorney, this client’s plan seems legal…. I just don’t want to get myself in trouble somehow.
If the client is asking you to do this, that is on them and not you. You are simply developing and designing. The client is responsible for their content, which should be stated anyway in a legal page on the site.
