I’m looking for hierarchy + connecting lines
I want to take table data and represent it in a chart like this
It could but it’d be pretty complex.
I’d be inclined to look for a plugin to do that.
@paulie_d, tx, any suggestions where to look for such a plug-in or what to code it in?
Try googling CSS Organisation Chart Plug…and be patient.
You could also try Googling “CSS tree menu” to get examples of how to do the connecting lines. This one looks halfway there for you (I’m visualising a few lists floated alongside each other for each branch of the tree) http://cssdeck.com/labs/pure-css-tree-menu-framework

next challenge: collapsable tree branches: html5 has ‘summary’ but not all browsers support it yet (namely, Firefox); are we into javascript now?
SharePoint does it:

I would change the layout to be more vertical, but this could work
are we into javascript now?
Most likely, but you could experiment with the checkbox hack too: http://codepen.io/bisserof/pen/fdtBm
