box-shadow on :before elements?

I’m want to apply a shadow to a blockquote and an accompanying :before element that makes up the quote look like a speech bubble. I can’t figure out get the shadow to wrap completely around the bubble without leaving a transparent space next to the before element.

Update:
I rethought the problem and came up with a solution that, while not exactly the same, I think will work just fine.
