I have a simple but yet mind boggling issue that has my mind spinning, and that is. What would be with best Width for my Content Area and my Sidebar.
I am creating an WordPress Blog, one that I will be embedding Affiliate Videos and Affiliate Banners. So what I am needing advice for is this: If the Width of the Wrapper is 910px, then what would be the best width for my Content Area and my Sidebar ? The Wrapper is containing the Content and Sidebar….
Thank you….
If I’m being dead honest, I think you’re asking the wrong question. At this stage of the game in web development, there is no answer I can tell you in terms of width. That’s because, there is NO standard screen size. I’m typing this on a 23″ monitor. Some people consider that small and will have a 27″ or even a 30″. Then again, many will read this on a 4.3″ retina display, which poses it’s own set of problems.
The best thing I can tell you is to think fluidly. You need to work in percentages whenever possible, as opposed to strait up pixels. Then, you’ll have to use media queries for breakpoints… which ideally you won’t have but you inevitably will.
Here is a starting tutorial and explanation:

@media

Like Joe said, it totally depends on your content. Most sizes seem to conform to the 960px grid these days. I would also include @media for large screens so your site fills out those bigger monitors. However, it depends on your site.
