Ha. This is actually exactly where I am at. I have been doing my own custom themes for about 8 months now but still wonder if I am just better of re-styling another theme. I ended up creating my own boilerplate for WP and have a bunch of snippets that I will use through the different projects saved in a text file for use.
Through everything, my biggest question was if I should use something like Genesis as a base, then implement my boilerplate so I have some of the back end stuff I wouldn’t normally get. But then again there are a lot of plugins that can do that for me. Mainly SEO and extra security.
