From a legal point of view, assuming you’ve both signed a contract that gives all the copyrights to the client, you haven’t really got a leg to stand on. It does, however, feel unreasonable that there is a link to the designer and not to the developer.
That link is potentially valuable to you from an SEO point of view too, so it’d be a shame for it to go to waste. Perhaps explain that if he didn’t want the link there, he/she should have made that clear at the start of the project because it’s relatively standard procedure for developers to do that.
