For headlines and body text do not use a pure black. Something a little softer is more inviting, and easier to read.

The headline style on your articles is also a little difficult to look at. Instead of dark blue with a black drop shadow, choose a blue that is a little lighter and of a different hue, then make the drop shadow more subtle (use a light shade of gray, not black … or do not use a drop shadow at all).

Also, I don’t mean to sound like Debbie Downer, but I find the “pitch” background image distracting, especially since it is not seamless. I think you can improve on that.
