With a lot of jQuery plug-ins you will need to set them up for your own use…all the desired options are probably in there…

For example with http://lokeshdhakar.com/projects/lightbox2/ – you need to make sets in order for the navigation to kick in otherwise it will just display one image. That navigation can be re-styled with CSS…

Same deal with Slider / Carousels – http://www.woothemes.com/flexslider/ is good – you options for what kind of navigation you want to use, how it fades etc etc
