i don’t think its the background, so much as your widths and margins being pretty wonky in your css. i’d start there.

taking the margin-left: 17%; out from #footercontent already helps a bit, but there’s something else in your css that’s causing more space to appear to the right of your content than needed, producing a horizontal scrollbar and making it so your layout does not fill 100% of the screen.
