thanks for prompt reply. However alterations to the style.css where you suggested did not have any effect. :(
I now layout my problems for this navbar if you would be good enough to read it and find time to help me again please.

1. the grey navbar is about 75px in height. I want to make it about half that.

I have created menu buttons on the navbar by calling a class in style.css

I call it by putting (<button class=”navbtnhome”>home</button>) in the navigation label in menus
2. I cannot change the menu button colour in that class (inheriting it I suppose.)
