Maybe you could provide a link? If ‘nothing’ is showing while the images are loaded, you could consider just placing an absolutely positioned gif below the slider. It will never be really hidden apart from the image on top but nobody will be the wiser anyway.

Another option would be to listen to the onload event of the images – that way the loading gif could be hidden when ready.
