Only part of the analogy that breaks down is the fact that XAMPP is cross-platform and CodeKit is not.

I would recommend CodeKit for Mac however there are some alternatives for PC too. Koala is a free one and PrePros is another paid one at around the same price as CodeKit. However, I prefer doing my work in Yosemite so CodeKit is a no brainer for me.
