I think the difference in weights between Chrome/Safari and Firefox is due to the rendering engines that they use. One approach to this may be to do a little bit of education with your client and let them know that the way type is rendered in Photoshop or a JPG file is not the same as it will be rendered in a browser. Another thing that I like to do with clients is talk to them about how low the likelihood is that a visitor will be viewing the site in multiple browsers at the same time. Therefore, as long as the site functions and looks as similar as it can across browsers, they should be happy with it. Not always as easy as I am making it out to be, but hopefully that helps.
