#44: Hodgepodge of WordPress Tricks

It's WordPress Week here at CSS-Tricks, so I wanted to so a WordPress-themed screencast and cover a lot of mini-tips that haven't made it into previous WordPress screencasts. We cover:

  • Listing categories with a built-in function and building a tabbed navigation from them with "current tab" functionality
  • Numbering comments with a simple incremented PHP variable.
  • Improving WordPress search with a plugin and making better design choices.
  • Live comment previews with JavaScript and/or plugin.
  • Setting better titles for all pages.
  • Setting different backgrounds based on URL.
  • Setting different styling based on the post ID.

hey Chris thanks for those really nice videos…

one question yet, i'm not sure how you do to post all of the videos into the videos page, is it a plug-in that posts the subpages?

    thanks again…

  8. Chris, have you looked at the WordPress Advanced Search plugin? It addresses some of the things you mention in the video.

Does anyone know of another hack similar to Different Posts Per Page? I'm not keen on giving out my email to some author to do who knows what with. There are thousands of other authers out that that create wordpress plugins that don't require this, surely someone else has something similar to this hack w/o having to give him or her my name and email address.

    Anyone?

Thanks Chris. Brilliant video. Keep em coming.

  12. Very good, I'm loving this week!

  13. Hey Will, have you used it? It looks pretty interesting, but it also looks like it hasn't been updated in a while. I wonder how far it sinks it's teeth into WordPress to do what it does and I also wonder how efficient it is. I'd love to see a blog actually using it.

Chris, can I adopt you? I'm a grandmother who has been designing Websites for a dozen years, but I'm just now getting into using WP as CMS. I have learned so much from you, primarily because you don't use geek-speak and you use a Mac. Your screencasts make me feel like you're one of my son-in-laws sitting down with me to show me how to work with php and css.

Thank you, and can I bake you some cookies or knit you a scarf?

  15. I'm just getting started with wordpress myself, so I've not used it. They are using it on that site though (http://zirona.com)

I posted this on the front page post for this screencast, before realizing that the discussion is actually over here. I was wondering how you did your archives page. It's pretty cool and I'd like to do something similar.

  17. Haha =) That's the first time I've ever been offered a scarf donation! I'm glad to help Mihla.
