New Screencast: Status, Fluid and Menu Bar Apps
* 9/26/2008 — 8 Comments *
Fair warning: this screencast is fairly Mac-specific and I ramble on about all kind of random non-web design related stuff. I introduce the new web app Status that I’ve been working on. Then I show Fluid, which is a Mac app for creating site-specific desktop applications and create one for Status. Then while I was on the subject, I introduce a few other Menu Bar applications that I find indispensable.
I’d love to get more people in the CSS-Tricks group on Status, so if you are interested in checking it out, contact me with your email address and I’ll add ya.

Hi Chris, Thanks for the usually entertaining report on technology. You’re a huge help in the community. I can’t wait to see how Status takes off. I’m sure it will catch on to most twitter users out there!!
Thanks Again
Yeah, I must say the same- really enjoy and appreciate Your work!
this is awesome, but why the fluid doesn’t work on Tiger???!!!!
Thanks for the info on your software, that’s some useful menubar stuff. But what’s your hardware config look like? I know, Apple. But iMac? MacBook? I’m curious. (And I’m also thinking about switching. However, the price is pretty steep, so the Hackintosh is looking pretty nice.)
@Ben: I’m using a 24″ iMac (this latest aluminum model). So the hackintosh is running about $800 and the 20″ iMac at base is $1199. When you factor in that the $800 doesn’t include a monitor and the iMac screens are gorgeous, plus the fact you would own a legitimate machine that is guaranteed to work, I think you are far better off buying the iMac.
I think the opinions that Macs are overly expensive is exaggerated. Yes, they are a bit more expensive, but aren’t you worth it? Are you worth the investment?
@Chris: Don’t get me wrong, I would love to have an iMac. If i get a mac, it will be either the iMac or a Mac laptop. However, I was thinking of maybe spending around $200 to revamp my PC and turn it into a Hackintosh and tri-boot Windows and Linux. That would be a fun playground.
Either way, it will cost me more money than I would like to spend. I guess that’s what I get for being an art student.
Most likely I will wait until I get a job with a solid flow of money before I start going Mac crazy. Til then, I’ll get my Mac fix through your videos
For Windows users, you can get a similar “Site Specific Browser (SSB)” called Bubbles. Does a lot of cool Windows only stuff and is quite similar to Fluid.
Hey chris,
Can you tell me how you got the twitterific app in your statusbar please?
