New Screencast: Introduction to Google Analytics

*   August 14th, 2008   *

by: Chris Coyier

Google Analytics is a free service to track all sorts of information about the visitors to your website. I recently had a weird experience with the Analytics on CSS-Tricks, so I thought it would be a good time to introduce it to folks who might not already know much about it and also share that experience. As with most things, it has its ups and downs, so I introduce an alternative product at the end as well.

    You probably already know, but instead of logging in and out you can give your various email accounts admin rights to the other accounts and you can just switch between profiles in the top right of analytics.

    Why are statistics important?

    Statistics are important because it allows us to act on facts not guesswork. If certain keywords aren’t performing, we can opt to refine our keyword strategy.

    The more data the better.

    Stat are also very important for web commerce sites. If you are getting 60k visitors a day but only 6 sales you have some thing very wrong with site usability. Also like he showed in the screencast were Analytics show what screen size and browsers your visitors are using. Can help you design your site to be easily viewable by most of your users.

    Great info! I’m still building my website so I have yet to do the whole analytics thing but I might check out Google Analytics thanks to this video :)

    I actually came across Piwik the other day. It is an open source analytics tool that you host on your web-server. For those that want to have all their own data on their site and not rely on google, it might be a good fit.
