There are over 600 blog posts on this site over the course of nearly 3 years. Some of them are… better than others. I think it is the responsible thing to do is try to keep that content current and in good working order. So I’m going to dedicate a full month to it and declare May “Maintenance Month.” I have identified a good number of articles that I would like to go back and revisit. Some because technology has evolved since then and need to be brought current. Some because the demo is ugly and I feel like redoing it or expanding upon the the examples available. And definitely any I find that have bad information or I feel are poorly written.
I will be republishing them as I do it, but clearly marking their original publication date and a brief summary of what has been changed. Maybe not every single thing I post in May will be maintenance, but so far I’m planning that most of it will be.
Two things: 1) If you feel like joining me on your own blog, awesome! Let me know, maybe we can make a website of participants or something. 2) If you know of articles on this site that need maintenance, also let me know and I’ll try and work them in.
Great idea Chris!
Yep it’s great!
I may have to declare May as maintenance month also.
That’s a great idea.
That’s good idea chris hopefully you keep the good article especially which have CSS tricks
Chris, you have a terrifying amount of energy. And I applaud that.
@Marc lol! Been thinking the same thing!
great idea Chris, this will certainly remind us of articles which have been forgotten about and renew interest in many of them I am sure

Being as obsessive as I can be, this sounds like something I would do. Why let the past be the past when you can change it and make it better, right? I look forward to seeing your new takes on old material. I’m sure you’ll feel better after getting things updated.
Good idea!
I hope others will follow you.
BTW, I have an idea for you [for after May]:
How about a single web page that will have every
Each HTML element
Each CSS style declaration {padding, margin…}
Each jQuery method.
Let me know what you think :)
Thing about that is that those sites already exist. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see his take and design on it, but I think his time might be spent better not re-inventing the wheel.
@Christian Thanks, I understand what you are saying.
But as one who follows his style in design and coding and i think that we all can learn from his neat way of implementing and the work flow of just about anything. i Think we all are going to enjoy it. (and for sure learn from it)
Chris, What do you say?
How do you have the time for all of this? None-the-less, Thank You!
I’m loving this idea. I’ve planned for a while to update some of the old puzzles on my site and either restyle them, add more content to their pages to waste less paper, or both. I’ll have to actually get on that idea now!
This is a fantastic idea Chris. We’ve been talking recently about needing to do this but weren’t sure about the best way to go about it. I think I’ll be joining you this month as well and bringing Arbenting back up to date with the best and most current content.
Geez Chris! Do you still have time to do anything that is not web related? hope you still do… go out grab a beer , eat pizza, go karaoke, get a full body massage, play ufc undisputed or guitar hero, watch a movie, maybe even sleep all day?… you deserve it more than any other web designer I know…
hiya,
great idea… can i ask you to check the files on the screencast you did about feedsmusher/RSS/Simple Pie?
the reason is that when you go through the tutorial files you get errors. someone posted in the comments section as well but then the comments were locked as it was a while ago.
It would be totally awesome of you if you could sort that out as i love the idea of being able to smush feeds!!!!
thanks!
i think is useful to make maintenance perdiodically, in web, in blog, etc. it is like reading a book again, many thins can change as we change as we grow, i think i will implement a maintenance time for my own works
I think it’s always a great idea to do some spring cleaning. I will definitely try to that myself.
really great idea Chris…thanks
I will do the same. Great Idea!
Hey Chris,
Any chance you can add a link to the demo files you created when you did the Designing for WordPress series of screen casts (25, 26 & 27) for http://chriscoyier.net/?
Having watched the screen casts recently it would be helpful to be able to look at the code for some parts to see better what you have done and I can’t find a link to the files.
cheers,
Steve
Hi Chris
As someone that is currently looking at doing a long overdue re-design / re-alignment of their site, this topic is actually bang on with my own agenda.
In some ways it reminds me of the old CSS Reboot days (does that still happen?).
Anyway, one of the major bug bears I have is that I love some of my old content and pretty much don’t care about some of it. I’ve thought about ditching ALL content and starting from scratch but then decided against it, perhaps what I need is just a damned good clear out.
Count me in!
Cheers
Alan
Geez, I’ve been fixing your posts for years. Hahahaha.
comedy comment :)
Nice! This is really smart and something that all online publishers (including newspapers and magazines) should consider doing.
