I think making the background white just for that 3-column text-heavy area and type dark gray.

Obviously that’s a rough indication but not feeling it myself as it’s too jarring with the rest of the branding & colour scheme.
Yep, that looks pretty awful ;) 3 white boxes? No…
You’d have to change your margins and padding and maybe take that white to full browser width. Would give you a nice solid header, a break for your main content/text and then a solid footer.
It’s kind of a pet peeve of mine to see an entire web site with reverse type. It works only with very minimal text… in my opinion… but that’s just me!
