vertical lavalamp

I have been searching for days and days on a tutorial to help me construct a vertical lavalamp menu. I have only found one:
http://www.queness.com/post/710/clean-a … u-tutorial. Unfortunately the highlight does not reset to the selected nav item. I am trying to learn jquery more in depth, but I have a long way to go.

In the meantime I was wondering if anyone has had experience or knows any resources where i could learn how to construct a vertical lavalamp menu.
