Use any font with CSS only

  • # July 2, 2009 at 5:18 pm

Basically it works like this, you add a font file to your server and using basic CSS you include and use it on typographic elements of your choosing. Right now it only works in Safari 3.1+ and Firefox 3.5+ with Opera support coming soon and their is an IE workaround available. It might work on Chrome or any browser using webkit as well.

There is still much debate on this topic (re: legalities) and I can only imagine the horror the internet will see once amateurs start using ridiculous fonts.

Regarding the legalities, their are a lot of creative commons licensed font’s to be found and used, here are is a good place to start: http://openfontlibrary.org

I agree that once anyone can use a font of their choosing we are going to see some horrible font choices, complete with bright contrasting colors and background-colors! The Horror.

I cant see what the fonts look like before downloading, this is bad…..

I would love to see a site that has free for all uses fonts, shows you the fonts, then you can use on sites.

typography is something I find difficult to get teh best from, I stick to the main basic. tried & tested… hehe
