RegExp for web developers

  • # July 20, 2013 at 8:55 am

    Hi guys.

I’m in process of learning JS – now read about regExp and wondering how well web developer should know regEx (they seems scary)? Any thought. Thanks

It’s a good idea if you understand the basics of it, in particular when it can be useful (IE matching something following a pattern rather than a specific string). Outside of that, you are likely to most of the time be able to google the exact syntax when you run into needing it.

I haven’t used RegEx much in JS (Can’t, in fact, recall the last time I needed it for JavaScript at all), but it occasionally pops up as very useful way to do things in the backend.

I would say it’s something to be familiar with but not necessary.

Depends on if you just want to “get by” or want it to be actually useful. Once you get even mildly comfortable with regexes, you find uses for them all the time. They’re very powerful and quite convenient.

Thanks for advices. Maybe after I became more comfortable with main concepts of JS.
