I thought Transcendence was pretty good.

Dude… did not see it. I will have to wait until it’s out. Wait, is it out? I heard an NPR interview about it when it was in theaters. But… if you’re right and it is good, this will prove the “Rotten tomatoes is not always right” theory.

Did you guys ever see “Exit Through the Gift Shop“? I thought it was a FANTASTIC documentary. Some people think it’s played out but that’s because it was so good they watched it 5 times.

    Well, it’s free on YouTube:

Not sure where you purchase your movies (or if you have Apple TV).

That film came up a lot in my feed on Letterboxd. Haven’t seen it yet.

I do not have Apple TV and if I’m totally honest… I rarely watch TV or movies anymore. No time. I used to watch a LOT of movies and even considered film school (VERY briefly). If you can believe this… I watch most of my movies nowadays by checking them out at the local library. But then again, I only watch one probably every 2 months or so.

You should totally watch “Exit Through the Gift Shop”. It’s the film that made white people everywhere love Banksy.

Honestly, some of the best stuff I’ve seen lately has been from the Vice YouTube Channel:

Edit: Their coverage of Ukraine and Ferguson was outstanding.

I would totally do that but I want the best possible 5EO optimization and AJAX isn’t really 5EO friendly.

I’ve never had a problem. And there are several documentations on 5EO friendly AJAX.

I’m subscribed to Vice on Ytube. Some of their content is questionable.

I’ve seen “Exit Through The Gift Shop”. Unfortunately, before I saw it I read reports that it might not have been 100% authentic and that it was scripted a lot more than it admits, and so that kind of ruined it for me (thinking “hm, I wonder if….” all the time).

Documentaries are probably my favorite genre so seeing one where things might have been staged, put a bit of a damper on things for me.

Then again, another documentary where there’s reports that it wasn’t all real was Catfish, and I did enjoy that one a lot. And the same with The King Of Kong. I guess for those it didn’t matter that much, whereas for the Banksy movie, if it wouldn’t be all real, it would be more misleading than entertainment.

    Anyway.

Never seen The Big Lebowski either. I have a feeling it’s just not the kind of movie for me, since there’s really no movie by the Coen Brothers that I like.

Which makes me think — a movie site can never recommend movies based on what “the world” thinks of it (because taste is all personal, as we can see from this very thread), but recommendations based on your own taste might just work. For example, if the site knows I don’t like any Coen Brothers movies I’ve seen, it should never recommend me any of their movies at all. Yet if the site knows I like movies that are based on time travel plots, then recommending me that would definitely help.

All this to say to the OP: maybe don’t recommend movies based on “general” popularity, but recommend movies based on the individual user’s taste. Netflix tries to do that, but their algorithm is a little dodgy.

(Holy crap, can I ever write a SHORT post?!!?)

    Taste changes with age.

What I liked before, I can’t stand watching now. Currently, for me it’s all about physiological thrillers.

@Jarolin —if you had any doubts as to whether personal commentary/discussion could add to the interest of your site, I think this thread should answer your question.

In terms of accuracy? Or just in terms of subject matter? I never really thought Vice was an unbiased news organization. I just find their stuff really entertaining.

So? Pretty much every idea has been done. It’s up to you to do it better or different. Keep going!

Subject matter (e.g. explicit sex Jokes told by young kids).

    Keep going!
