Hi everyone! hope you are having a good holiday weekend! I am doing an overhaul on my website and next on the list is the archive page. I am stuck trying to find a good solution for what I want to accomplish visually. To make the explanation easier I can provide some images:
this is the markup structure I would like:

and here is the mock with out the markup structure:

This is the only code that I could come up with that was not a wordpress shortcode that renders an unordered list.

What I need: a few hints, or even for someone to alter my code so that it is copy/paste-able into my archive.php I am having trouble figuring out how to separate the posts into months and then rendering the month and year.

    ok, heres what I have:

Haven’t tested the code, but these guys sounded like they knew what they were talking about:

TheDoc, Thanks for that link. It looked promising but nothing came of it. after the first batch of code (which outputted in reverse) the conversation thread turned toward category separation instead of dates.
However I was let to this plugin that lists the dates in a fashion similar to what I am trying to do, but I am still trying to figure out how to use my thumbnails in place of the post titles… http://www.viper007bond.com/wordpress-plugins/clean-archives-reloaded/#comment-229363
I think I’m coming to a wall with that one as well…
