Different image sizes for thumbnail than other uploads

Is it possible to have specific add_image_size()’s for just the thumbnail?

For example, any normal image upload produces a small, medium and large file, but thumbnails only produce a box image size and not the other three (and obviously vice-versa).

Ah that’s sort of it yeah, but is it possible to have multiple sizes of thumbnails?

So:

Normal uploads = small, medium, large, full
Thumbnail = box, large-box, full

Or something like that? Just thinking it would save on storage if I don’t have to create multiple sizes of everything as I have about eight variations.
