Creating two bars with a fading boundary line in between

Hi
I want to create two bars of black colour on my page. The bars will be separated by a darker black line, fading out into the upper bar.
Tried to do it by creating two divs of grey colour and putting a line in between using [hr] tag, dint work out well.
How can i do it.
