    i removed the meta tag that Paulie_D mentioned and that seemed to do it. I'm pretty much restyling the twentyeleven theme in wordpress so I'm not sure what some of the code is doing at this point. Thanks for your help guys

    There's plenty of places to learn css. This site is one of the many places that taught me. Also look into lynda.com. That method of teaching isn't for everyone but it helped me a lot. Just google css tutorials you'll find quite a few.
