Any chill electronic really; Active Child, Bonobo, Chase & Status, Faithless, The Glitch Mob, Parachute Youth, Pretty Lights, Stay+, Tycho, VibeSquaD, etc.
If I feel like something a bit more amped up then I might put on Calvin Harris, Deadmau5, Flux Pavilion, Knife Party, Nero, OVERWERK, Pendulum, etc. I'm also a big fan of the mashups put together by Kap Slap.
Believe it or not, I'll actually listen to most genres, but I find that I work best listening to the above. If it's something that I can sing along to, my productivity decreases…
Problem Child (1 & 2), Children of the Corn (series), St. Elmo's Fire, Breakfast Club, Wall Street and so on. Perfect time to watch Home Alone, though.
Usually anything chill, lounge and ambient. Jon Hopkins, Fragile State, Massive Attack, Solar Fields, compilation albums (Chill Out Lounge, Cafe Del Mar, Supperclub) and sometimes just some radio stations in iTunes.
Though every once in a while, I need some serious rock like Warrior Soul, Killing Joke or The Sisters Of Mercy.
Dang! Yall prefer chill music? I think its just my crazy brain, i need something loopy and crazy.
@chrisburton, 25 tomorrow? Well happy early birthday man, and i for some reason thought you were older? Problem child was an amazing movie when i was younger, wasn't there something in there about Kramer and if he saw something like a twinkie he got really mad or something? lol...
If yall want a spark of crazy loud music, check out Lamb of God, Pinkly Smooth, King for a Day(feat. Kellin Quinn).
Maybe i need to tone back my music and i might be able to be more creative?
Yes, Home Alone is a classic (first one)! Once you watch the movie Party Monster, well, you want ever want to see him in anything else again.
Anything that doesn't have lyrics. Could be electronic music-- but more often than not it is a nice genre station on Pandora or other online radio sites like:
@JohnMotylJr Just make sure that your music doesn't stop you from being able to 'get in the zone'. You know when you're in the zone because you might pause your music for a second, and then forget hit play again for the next 30 minutes! Luckily there's an OS X app for that: http://takefiveapp.com/mac
@joshuanhibbert : That's so true! Normally my habits lead me to sit down to start coding and then i look up and realize i haven't ate anything in 12 hours and its dark out. Yeah, i do that too much!
@ben_boomer : I'll totally check that out, i need to switch things up for sure.
@joshuanhibbert : Ohhh man, i saw this website a LONG time ago (or a similar) but i always forgot the name.. YES! Getting bookmarked now, nice share man! You totally need to rock a gold star for that man, as i continue to watch cats play and listen to rain and thunder.
It depends on the project and how well its going. I tend to lean towards hard rock when I'm on a hot streak, classic rock or country when I first start or am on a nice casual/steady roll. When I get stuck on something, I tend to switch over to classical music or listen to a podcast.
I definitely have a tendency to hit the pause button when I'm close to solving an issue I've run into, and forget to hit play during the coding frenzy that usually follows.
@chrisburton : There's totally some yellow in there!
@joshuanhibbert : Totally rocked that rainymood site to sleep last night { loved it } and this one seems exciting as well..
@pmac627 : I think i'm going to start playing post casts (i.e. ShotTalk) in the background while i code, maybe subliminally i will start coding better.
I'm a wierd one. I bounce around so many genres now. Matthew Good Band, Radiohead, Mindy Smith, Aerosmith's first album, Dave Matthews Band, ELO, Scars on 45, Our Lady Peace...
@robertallen : I need to get into Spotify, when it first came out i never got an 'invite' so i never cared for it and kept using Pandora, now all i do is stream music from my xbox or find youtube playlists. Do you still need an invite or have to pay for Spotify?
I'm really partial to El Ten Eleven and Tycho when I need something chill. Lately I've also found that opera music kind of puts me in a groove, especially Mozart and Rossini. I love you, Spotify.
I tend to listen to a lot of heavy metal, speed metal, early 80's punk rock, and dark 80's new wave. For some reason it helps me focus and get into a problem solving mode. Chill music is more for my brainstorming mode.
@Shannendoah1 : Finally, i am not alone. That's my style as well, anything fast loud and metal baby!
I am experimenting though and I am going to research (or search for research papers on the matter) of the effects on cognitive functions while listening to music. I did a paper on this a while back, in regards to heavy metal music, and the responses from the brain lead to a more care-free mood.
@nwalton : I'm sure classical music does add a creative or easy atmosphere.
I'm really happy with all this feedback. Personally when i code, its more back-end then mock-ups, design, etc. I normally have predetermined tasks that need accomplishing so i don't need to be so creative as far as design, maybe architecture. So music is a big part of what i do, i am sure it is with you guys as well.
I'm trying to branch out from my norm and give some of your suggestions a try. For "chill" music i am currently giving "Of Monsters and Men" a try. They are a folk band from Iceland with a female singer. Also dabbling in "Mumford" and Sons, loving it so far.
Everything! Really I listen from classical music to metal to rock and roll to rap. Some people would say I have no personality, I prefer the term "open minded". When I'm working on something complicated it usually happens that the playlist ends and I don't notice and keep working with my headphones in my ears like a complete retard.
It really varies; the only thing that affects my selection is how complex my work is. The more complex the work, the less complex the music and vice versa.
For some reason i cant do anything properly without music, and its become a big part of my coding. What are yalls favorite jams to code to?
Currently i'm listening to: August Burns Red ;)

I used to watch movies constantly while I worked. Mostly movies I had seen as a child.
@joshuanhibbert : haha, that's what i'm talking about!
@chrisburton, Well lets get an idea of your age with a couple movie examples?
I'll be 25 tomorrow.
Problem Child (1 & 2), Children of the Corn (series), St. Elmo's Fire, Breakfast Club, Wall Street and so on. Perfect time to watch Home Alone, though.
RAC, Monstercat, Telemonster

Thanks, John.
Hmm, I haven't seen that movie in 6+ months.
@Senff, lol im gonna check that out..
This is kind of un-related but i keep this on my side monitor, lol idk why but sometimes its refreshing to look over and see them playing
24/7 livestream of kitties
@JohnMotylJr It's weird how easy that is to watch when the kittens are playing. This site is similar: http://www.rainymood.com/

He'll have to settle for a green star.
@JohnMotylJr Then you might like this site even more: http://www.calm.com/

I just don't have a particular genre anymore.
I heart you Spotify.
@robertallen : I need to get into Spotify, when it first came out i never got an 'invite' so i never cared for it and kept using Pandora, now all i do is stream music from my xbox or find youtube playlists. Do you still need an invite or have to pay for Spotify?
Our lady peace = Back in the Day!
No, I believe it's still free, but you have to put up with the ads every few songs.
Also, they claim you get better quality with a paid subscription, but I am not sure how much of a difference there is.
I listen to music I'd listen to when I'm not coding :p But at times I want to be super productive I listen to instrumental music.
I roll through Rdio. Every person in the office has an account so it's fun to jump into what other people are listening to.
I listen to dubstep a lot.
Music in the office = great times coding...
Until you look over at the guy banging his head and playing keyboard guitar, always comical.
@JohnMotylJr - Frets On Fire
Swedish house mafia & foster the people
Has to be BBC Radio 6 Music - http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/ No ads, music from all corners and funny stuff too. Great for work.
Mostly I'm listening to my boss whine about why I haven't finished yet. :)
Depends on the project but i find Tycho is suitable for any situation.
Dang, i wish i could @* you all, you guys are adding some great stuff.
@pmac627 : Yes! I totally can see some of the people i work with playing this. @simoncmason : Just listened to Radcliffe and Maconie :)
@Paulie_D : Ehhh, what does he even know?!
@joshuanhibbert : Green or gold, you deserve another one, been night #2 ive actually slept really good playing that site on my phone.
I did notice a site called GrooveShark. Nothing super exciting but i think you can add local music and pick from their selections as well.
There's also a Chrome Extension called YouZeek where you can listen to artists from all over the world. Thought that was pretty interesting.
He knows enough to give me deadlines ...even if they are unrealistic....the b*stard!
@Paulie_D : Is today a work day for you?
@JohnMotylJr.
Yep...normal working day here in the UK.

I prefer listening to anything. Last year 90s pop hits really motivated me. I prefer to listen to something I can sing along to.
There is also http://getworkdonemusic.com

Often carstairs radio or another 50's jazzy radio station via iTunes radio, or African music but it depends my mood.
