[Solved] Need help choosing a hosting company.

  • Howdy yall, so normally the clients i work with already have hosting and for my personal (portfolio) website i just use some free site. Well my portfolio has been expanding alot.

    I just want to know of a really good hosting site, nothing crazy though $$$$, because the site is mostly static, using a little php, tons of js/plugins/ etc.

    I will probably only have a max of 500pages.

    If yall could hook me up with personal experiences because i know i can google all this info but for real, i value your word than the internets.

    Thanks gents/lacies..

  • I would like to know some suggestions as well. Currently i am with justhost.com.au $3 a month full CPanel access everything i have need thus far is available to me and i think this is a good price.

  • I have had excellent results over the years with GoDaddy. Their interface is pretty easy to get the hang of and if you get stuck with anything, you can get phone support 24 hours per day. I am in the US and when I call, I get a native english speaking person. They have several other call centers and depending on the country you are calling from, you get someone that you can easily understand as well.

    There are other cheaper alternatives out there but For the extra buck or two per month, the easy to use interface and awesome technical support is well worth it!

  • I absolutely despise GoDaddy. I think their product is terrible and I always try to steer my clients clear of it.

    Personally, I love using Stablehost. I think their product is great and I've always had really quick customer service in the very few times that I've needed it. The problem with this type of question is that there are so many different providers out there and everybody has different experiences with them. I can only speak from my own personal experience.

    Shameless self promotion: They've given me a coupon code, much like Mediatemple have given Chris on the Deals page. If you use the code GiveMe40 you'll get 40% off your first order at StableHost.

  • I second Stablehost. Using @TheDoc's referral is a bonus.

    #Boom

  • SUCCESS! Thanks gentlemen. I have done a lot of reading on this and i have heard many bad things about GoDaddy but very good things about Stablehost and Bigwefish. Thanks @TheDoc & ChristopherBurton for the suggestions as well as @JDS.

    Thanks for the code as well

  • As a previous customer of BigWetFish, I cannot recommend them; their customer service isn't that good. I'm now with Media Temple, and they are fantastic!

  • I'll second Media Temple, but they are on the more expensive side as far as bargain hunting.

    I've heard all kinds of bad things about GoDaddy but personally I've never actually experienced any of them between maybe 5 or 6 different clients who use them exclusively.

  • @joshuanhibbert, Thanks for the feedback, customer service is important to me because well, if i have problems i want em fixed and fast lol.. I have done investigating into Media Temple and although their services look great, it may seem a little overkill for what i require.

    @JoshWhite, im in the same boat. I have heard many bad things, and few good. I too have never used them for hosting (i've bought a few domains and that experience was pleasant).

    Thanks for the feedback guys, i really appreciate it.

  • @JoshWhite + @joshuanhibbert - I was with MediaTemple for a while as well. I thought they were great, good customer support. The problem is that I feel like their (gs) product suffers a bit with performance more than it should. If you need more than their (gs) than they are probably a great solution.

  • I've heard the same with their 'gs' hosting service having random downtime.

    I use Stablehost for hosting my site files. I used to have them host my domains but I feel there pricing isn't all that competitive so I went with GoDaddy.

  • I have my website hosted with 000webhost for free at the minute but it's playing on my mind a bit.

    Their service isn't too bad to be fair. The site loads relatively quickly but their FTP back end usually locks me out which means I have to log in again.

    I have just purchased the 6 month stable deal on StableHost, thanks to you guys. Never heard of them before. Also used the GiveMe50 code and got it for £11 ;) thanks.

  • I've been using Arvixe for about 2 years now and they have been flawless thus far. Best customer service I've had to deal with. Work uses HostGator and I half to say, while I don't like the website, their customer services has also been excellent.

    @Watson90 - I originally started with 000webhost. Their free product worked very well until they cancelled my account. They refused to tell me why, only claiming that I broke their terms of service. I found out a few weeks later that they shut me down because I installed an application with one of their auto-installer applications which sent out emails for specific processes (new registration). I tested it a few times and because it sent out 5 emails within an hour, they shut me down for making "a spam site". Biggest BS ever.

    Also, your website is throwing a "Error establishing a database connection" message.

  • I know i dont know why though. It may be that my domain hasn't propagated yet, I have edited the wp-config.php file and pointed the domain at 123-reg to the stablehost. But still nothing, I have no idea why it isnt working.

  • @pmac627 Duhh! I never added myself as a user to the database. Once I done that everything was fine. Can't believe how quickly it has been changed over.

    I'm kind of glad that I'm off free hosting to be honest as it puts my mind at rest. It seems to be loading my cufon font quicker too. Usually I would see Georgia and then it changes but it seems instantly happening now.

    All in all I'm happy :) thanks for the recommendations guys.

  • Media Temple has been my web host since the mid 2000's and I've always been super happy with them. Also, if you go to the "Deals" section on this site, you can get 20% off, which I used and now only pay $16/mo. Their customer service is awesome and you can call them 24/7 and talk to a real person! Good luck.

  • I used justhost for years never had an issue even when I missed a couple of payments, though after I closed my account i did get a couple of invoices telling me I was been charged £0.00 that month, probably a hiccup while updating their databases.

  • @ToxicFire I never liked their customer support.

  • HostGator has been great for me at work. Plus they have 24 hour support should an issue arrise.

    I also use DreamHost for my personal site and side projects as it is REALLY cheap - something like $40 for 2 years. Never really had an issue with them either.

  • Godaddy is the best hosting company.

  • HostGator anyday! 1and1, GoDaddy, Expertrio, Arvixe are some other options you might consider.

  • I made the switch to StableHost and used TheDoc's referral code.. All i can say is that i am in love with this hosting.

    I still prefer to purchase domain names from GoDaddy, only because its cheaper. But so far, StableHost has been amazing for me.

  • Same here @JohmMotylJr, I am liking it too! I particularly love the file manager in the back end, its so easy to use.

  • @Watson90, yeah it is pretty nice. Do you use ftp though? I personally use FileZilla for ftp'ing into my root directory. They make it very simple to set all that stuff up as well.

  • @JohnMotylJr I also use GoDaddy for my domains instead of with Stablehost.

    The screencast I sent you using Sublime, you can download an SFTP/FTP plugin for it.

  • @ChristopherBurton, I am going to check that out. I like FileZilla though when i have to transfer alot of things. But yeah, using a plugin for sublime would be awesome...

    Are you refering to this Sublime SFTP

  • That's it

  • @JohnMotylJr no I don't use an FTP service it doesn't seem to create the ftp username for me when I try to set one up :S it looks like a HTML page with no CSS whatsoever and then I fill in the details and click submit and nothing happens...

  • @Watson90

    If you plan on using FileZilla, is so super simple man. Just follow these steps:

    1. 1.) Go to your sites cpanel (http://domainname.com/cpanel) and log in.
    2. 2.) Click "FTP Accounts" under Files, or search for "FTP Accounts"
    3. 3.) Enter a name, password, confirm and select directory (i select my root dir "www")
    4. 4.) Create FTP Account
    5. 5.) Once created, go under FTP Accounts and find the one you just created. Now click "Configure FTP Client"
    6. 6.) *For FileZilla* select "FTP Configuration File"
    7. 7.) You have just downloaded an xml document that we will use in FileZilla
    8. 8.) Open up FileZilla and go: File / Import / *select the xml document you just downloaded* / Open
    9. 9.) When prompted click OK
    10. 10.) go: File / Site Manager and select your new FTP should look like (ftp.domainname.com) / Connect
    11. 11.) Enter your password
    12. 12.) And Boom goes the dynamite

    It may look like a lot of steps but its really not, its fairly simple..

    Simple as 3.14, however, im going to purchase that sublime ftp plugin, ill let you know how that works if you wish. Notepad ++ has a free ftp plugin but i prefer Sublime.

  • Worked like a charm thank you very much for taking the time to write that all for me, I don't know why but the page didn't look like that when I tried, it might have been because I just purchased the hosting the same day and it may not have been ready to add a new FTP user just then, but it's fine now. I'll use my FileZilla now :)

    I'm a windows 7 user so Sublime is out of the question, I prefer to just use Dreamweaver.

    I have been looking at Macbook's lately, they look soooo nice but they're so expensive!!! I know the old cliche goes You get what you pay for... but that is taking it a bit too far!

    Mac's are just so nicely built, but I can't justify it for the price and getting one on finance and tying myself into another contract is not something I'm willing to do, everything looks so good on Mac's though, Sublime, Coda etc.

    It's just unfortunate, maybe I'll be able to afford one in the future...

  • I hear ya, check this post out. By trade im a .net developer (web dev is a passionate hobby for me) that's why i stick with Windows, and yes you are correct, things do look a lot better on mac. But sublime still rocks out on Windows.

    If you just purchased your hosting then it will take a couple hours. StableHost had me up and running within an hour though. Although i don't like DreamWeaver AT ALL, i'm pretty sure you can FTP in through DW.

  • @Watson90 You can download and use Sublime on Windows 7.

  • What the F**K...I didn't even know it was for Windows! Haha, I like how it looks, I think I will download it :D

    Hmmm, £37 - I don't think I can afford that just at the minute how long does the evaluated version last for?

  • Just had a quick go with it. Changed its syntax to HTML and I like it! The one thing I LOVE about the web software on Macs is the font they use for programming it's so much nicer than the serif font on Dreamweaver. I know you can change the fonts on DW but you can't get it like the font in Sublime and Coda, thanks for the recommendation!

  • @Watson90 Forever, I think but you get popups notifying you when your trial is up and that you should purchase a license. When you can afford the license I would certainly pay for it. It's really worth it.

  • Yeah it's always good to give the developers something in return especially when it's deserved. I'll have a better play with it on my next project and see how it turns out :)

  • @Watson90 Yeah man, that post made me laugh. It is for windows as well. You can change the font as well. The fonts wont be as bada$$ as in a MAC but im sure you can find some online for free ( inconsolata, monaco, consolas[built into windows]) to name a couple.

    To change the font goto: Preferences / Settings - User. The code below is mine, you can certainly just add the font and font size.

    {
      "color_scheme": "Packages/Color Scheme - Default/Pastels on Dark.tmTheme",
      "font_face": "Inconsolata",
      "font_size": 12
    }

    You can get some tasty fonts from Google Web Fonts and millions of other font websites too.

    @ChristopherBurton, yeah man, paying for a license for ST2 was well worth it.

  • Thanks for that @JohnMotylJr, I was looking up some videos early hours this morning, and the shorthand tricks look immense. Such as typing HTML:5 I think and it lays out all the mark up ready for you to get started.

    Also that bar at the bottom where you can start nesting tags within each other such as a div with a class of header and a ul with 6 list items etc etc. That's some fancy sh*t!!!

  • @Watson90, So we totally arent using this thread for web hosting anymore, however, Sublime Text 2 is just that good we can get away with it.

    A few things i wanted to touch on, @joshuanhibbert made a pretty bad ass collection of snippets in which you can view them on his website or you could read an older post.

    Last thing, since you use Windows 7 i would suggest going into your: Preferences / Settings - Default and find this code:

    "font_options": [],

    replace with:

    "font_options": ["directwrite"],
  • Thanks for sharing that @JohnMotylJr! I've also just started working on a set of HTML snippets: https://github.com/joshnh/HTML-Snippets

    Also, I've decided to share my Sublime Text preferences file on GitHub: https://github.com/joshnh/Sublime-Text-Preferences/blob/master/Preferences.sublime-settings

  • What does that code achieve @JohnMotylJr?

    I'll have chance to have a better look at Sublime tomorrow, I'm working on a basketball website for my brother in law, so I'll give it a try :)

  • @joshuanhibbert, of course man, just trying to spread the word. Thanks for sharing those preferences, checking em out right now.

    @Watson90, DirectWrite (Windows). It basically makes it render and look better (your font in ST2).

  • Ahh right thanks man :D

  • @JohnMotylJr & @joshuanhibbert - Just playing around with Sublime Text 2 and I'm already loving it, I have already made my first snippet which when I type html5 and press TAB, it brings up all of the relevant markup to get me going, it's truly a pleasure to use and I haven't even scratched the surface!

  • @Watson90 The more you dive into it, the more you will appreciate it :)

  • ^ Couldn't be anymore right! So does this mean goodbye to DreamWeaver ?????

  • I believe it does from what I experieced last night. It does a better job keeping my code clean to with the indentation etc.

    One thing though. I dragged in some project folders to get started, is there a refresh button to update the folders structure? Or is it just good old F5?

  • @Watson90 - The folders should be updating automatically. Anything you do whether modify a file within your hierarchy or add/remove folders, in my experience, updates automatically.

  • I just dragged + dropped the folders across into Sublime, do I maybe need to go to File > Open > [...project files...]?

    Unless they did update automatically and I just didn't realise.
