Responsive theme for wordpress

  • Hi everyone,

Just joined up after visiting this site for a number of years!

I usually use Drupal CMS and the Omega mobile first theme but have decided to use wordpress for my personal site. It seems wordpress can do exactly what I want in addition to having a clean and much more usable dash (IMHO) compared to Drupal. The thing is, I'm at a bit of a loss on how to actually get started. Got wordpress installed, I like the idea of being able to tweak the html myself (Drupal gives you little control over that). I'm good to go, apart from the barrier of choosing a theme.

In Drupal I would use the Omega theme and make a child theme of that so theme updates didn't overwrite my changes.

Is it the same sort of thing with wordpress? Maybe using a framework with a child theme? I looked at bones starter theme but don't know LESS/SASS yet so would prefer to stick with good old fashioned css until I am more comfortable with theming. Basically, what do other people do who make custom responsive wordpress sites?

Something like this is what I'm trying to achieve: http://www.theme-junkie.com/themes/videoplus/

I could of course just buy the theme and get on with it, but what would be the point in that? I wouldn't learn anything. :)

Any pointers would be more than appreciated. Thanks.

    Sam.

  • WordPress does work quite the same way with parent/child themes. If you are looking for a responsive bare-bones theme for WordPress I would suggest starting with Skeleton (http://www.simplethemes.com/blog/entry/skeleton-wordpress-theme). From there you can create a new child theme (see: http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes) and customize to your hearts content.

  • My suggestion is wordPress is the best way for user friendly.I want to improve my wordPress knowledge through this forum. I have just gone through these videoplus and skeleton word press themes.

  • @cssgirl, thanks.

I have since installed bones html5 theme and am playing about with that. Not sure the difference between that skeleton but I'm sure it will become more obvious the more I go along!

The first obvious difference is that Bones is supposed to be tweaked and be used as a standalone theme, rather than being a base theme.

@Dhanishta, I'm doing the same, watching videos and reading many guides/forums.
