CSS Trick V10 - New Design discussion

  • I just reloaded the main page, and WHAM, new design! I like it, i really like it!
Feels good to be a backer now! :D
  • Guys, lets keep it all in one thread.

I'm sort of liking it but it'll take me a while to get used to the new version,

  • Agreed, quite an overhaul, but at first impression my eyes really liked what they saw!

The banner on the Demos page is absolutely awesomely badass.

  • Looks trying retro style and portal. But just i like old style more modern than this

  • I see no more comments counter for blog posts on the home page ? That's too bad, I liked it.

The whole thing looks really good. Retro style, I like it. :)

  • Love the footer links on rollover.

  • I'm seeing letters where icons for main nav should be on home (blog) page.

  • @theacefes Can you screenshot?

  • Ignore me - I just saw the posts in the blog section. :P Looks nice btw!

  • As others have noted, the icon-font for the menu images does not seem to work in FF or IE.

It's OK in my version of Chrome (21)

  • Looks great :) I thought I typed the url wrong haha

  • I'm seeing some bad problems with words wrapping to new lines righ tin the middle of the word. I'm on FF15 on Ubuntu 12.04

  • Post that bug on github @cnwtx

  • I was also hoping for an actual chat embed that others have suggested in the past. Chris notified me that we could use this http://tlk.io/css-tricks but I'd still rather it be in the forums instead of visiting two sites.

  • In general: not sure if I like it better or not. Big changes always take some time to get used to, but what I'm most impressed about is how fast this was all done.

Two things: I backed the Kickstarter project but not sure what login credentials to use for The Lodge. And second, it's not that clear anymore which threads in the forum have new posts. I realize it mentions the number of new posts, but it used to stand out more which threads were updated since my last visit. Wouldn't call that a bug, just a different design approach.

  • @senff I think he may have fixed that. They're not highlighted like they used to be but it does tell you how many new comments there are.

  • @ChristopherBurton Yep, that's what I meant. It does indicate that, but I liked it when I would go to the Forum page and see in just a glance away how many threads were updated. Now I have to scan a little more to see. No biggie though! I do miss the markup buttons though. Was super easy to select code and then hit that button that would add PRE and CODE to it.

(Also, seems I can't edit previous posts though. And first time I posted here since the redesign, I hit "POST COMMENT", the form went blank but I wouldn't see my post until I refreshed the page.)

  • I notified him of that also. I do wish the functionality of the forums stayed the same. Let's hope some of that is brought back.

  • Not to put words in @chriscoyier's mouth, but we should be seeing some further updates to the forum once the main site gets settled down.

  • I am glad to see the redesign live. I just need time to take it all in. It is often said that if you love a design at first sight, it is probably pedestrian and will date quickly (if it isn't already dated). I need a bit of time kick the tires and live with it before I can decide if it is different good or different bad.

I can say this now, it demonstrates a ton of work and thought as well as being very original. I'll circle back in a few days to profess my love.

  • @Sneff Chris is going to send us over the details sometime today (http://css-tricks.com/design-v10/#comment-189782)

And I love the new design, it's big and bold! Not too sure why there is no footer on the forum (this page). Kinda confused about that, and I'm also not a massive fan of the orange box behind the logo. But I reckon that will grow on me.

Last thing, what happened to all the twitter/facebook buttons at the end of each post? I've no problem copy/pasting the url to twitter but I reckon it's going to piss some people off.

  • This is not one of my favorite redesigns, maybe it will grow on me. I feel like there are a lot of clashing styles. It feels as if he tried to use as many "CSS-Tricks" as possible, even if they didn't go well together. That being said, the name of the site is CSS-Tricks so maybe it works?

  • As with any change, things will take some getting used to.

I quite like it overall, and I assume, as @TheDoc said, that there will be ongoing changes.

I would like to see the contrast increased in the forums; the font-size could use a boost too. Also, as @Senff said above, the 'new comment' indicator has no contrast at all. I was also a big user of the 'mark all read' button which seems to have disappeared!

Most avatars need to be re-uploaded as bigger images; they must look pretty bad on retina displays :p

  • The 'edit' button seems to have no function, also, posting a comment doesn't give any positive feedback, and requires a page refresh?

  • @joshuanhibbert - yup, those are all marked on github.

  • Further thoughts:

    • Totally agree with @HugoGiraudel regarding the post comment counter.
    • The Treehouse advert in the header doesn't look like an ad at all. Instead, it looks like descriptive text regarding CSS-Tricks.com.
    • I just have to mention contrast again, there are some areas in which it is very low.
    • Any plans on increasing the font-size for larger viewports?

Overall I think this design is an improvement, sorry for only pointing out the issues!

  • Hmmm, a lot of my formatting (and some symbols) are being stripped out of my comments.

  • @TheDoc Do you think it would be appropriate for me to list design quirks as issues on the GitHub repo?

  • Not sure! Could always fire him a tweet first, see if that's what he wants it for.

  • Also in chrome, the bold titles of the forum topics are a bit difficult to read...I think the font/weight were a bit of a poor choice, I agree entirely about the contrast issue...#D6D5D5 is WAY too close to white for my eyes...I am also having the issue of the posting/refreshing...But I assume this will all change soon.

I will say I think I may be quite partial to this design's predecessor...just was a little more 'intuitive'

  • I miss the frog... :( It's a style I haven't seen before, looks like a mix and I'm not blown away by it.. I love the old own, sorry Chris..

  • WHOA! I just left a comment on the post about the design, and it is publicly showing my email. @chriscoyier this is very undesirable, please fix it ASAP!!!

  • @joshuanhibbert That comment is fixed. You should have gotten an email from Kickstarter that kinda explains the situation there. Basically you go to your profile page and change your Display As name.

Any quirk whatsover please post to https://github.com/chriscoyier/CSS-Tricks-v10/issues

  • @chriscoyier I had followed that email to the letter only five minutes before commenting, so that's why I was so surprised! Thanks for fixing the issue, I assume it won't occur again?

  • @chriscoyier According to the comment preview, the issue will reoccur, despite having done exactly what you outline in your email. I'll post this to GitHub as an issue.

  • Woah, I just realized that the forum banner animates when you change the size!

I opened up developer tools to see how he did this... and it doesn't seem to be with media queries.

    I did find the images, though: 1 2 3

It's probably javascript; I think I'll be buying access to the screencasts, so I look forward to seeing that part.

  • I am always being told to confirm my email address even though I have confirmed it multiple times. Not really an issue on the website but is annoying on mobile as it stops me commenting in the forums.

    Like the new design though!

  • Where is the frog? And the asterisk? :(

  • @Senff,

Wow, that's ridiculous. Reminds me of this.

  • I'm just sort of slightly dumbfounded by how generically bad the site looks in IE9. Not that I really use IE for anything, but i sort of thought that in this day and age you would at least try to support the very latest IE release. The colors in the "Snippets" area look completely out of whack, and in the ""Gallery" section all the images are stacked in a long list of over-sized imagery that just looks plain bad.

I'm sure someone has already noted this as an issue in the Gitbug repo, i just couldn't find the time to browse through em all.
