Prototyping with Dummy

  • So I have been using this tool internally for years and finally got around to cleaning it up and releasing it. I thought it would be nice to let you know it was there and to get some feedback from some fellow front-enders on how it fits (or doesn't) into their own workflows. It's intended for the moderately advanced front end developer, comfortable setting up a virtual host.

Some more details and a demo at http://dummy.kerns.dk
  • Very cool! Not sure if I would use it but looks helpful.
  • Thanks, FireDart. I've personally come to rely on it, and can't start a new project without it. Having a TextMate bundle for it helps, as I'm able to pop in images and text into a blank canvas with a lot of speed. And test different outcomes, as in this example: http://dummy.kerns.dk/example.html

My need for it has a lot to do with the sort of design I tend to work with, which is highly editorial and extremely variable... newspapers mostly. If you work mostly with static, commercial layouts it would be a lot less useful.

When I get around to it I'll add a screen cast. It would probably explain things better.
  • So I've recently posted an update to dummy.kerns.dk, adding a link to a roughly cut screencast, and a code clip library for Coda 2. There is also a bundle for TextMate, but that's been there since the start.

Give it a shot in your next prototype.
