    after doing some tinkering and hiding my content div & its background, im now able to see the links and sprites.
    but they appear to be disabled.

    any ideas?

    Try floating your nav items. It doesn't look in the CSs like you have any positioning defined for your nav, so the divs of the top and bottom boxes may be overlapping it transparently, causing the buttons not to work.
