Hi there,
Do you have any recommendations for optimizing full-screen background images?
My background is 1600 x 1076 pixels. In Photoshop, I can get it down to 348k, but that's still too high...

can you post a link to your background image?
A big part of optimizing the image is knowing the contents...

In OSX you can use ImageOptim. I remember seeing somebody posting a Windows equivalent recently but I've completely forgotten what it was.

for .JPG images I am using this service
http://www.jpegmini.com
I was able to reduce your img from
349kb
to
218kb
or
you can use
http://incident57.com/codekit/
which optimizes as many images as you want in selected folder
